A scene from Korean drama, Descendants of the Sun. |
We have been warned to stay away from it, to not even think of giving it a chance if we care enough about having a life in the real world outside the TV, where there is no handsome Korean men in shiny armour to come in and sweep you of your feet or a second “just as handsome” lead to fight for your love with, sadly.
Of course, many of us don’t listen to these warnings and this young woman from China has certainly learned her lesson the painful way.
The damage done to Ms Huang after she binge-watched 18 episodes of her favourite Korean serials non-stop has not just deprived her of vital human interactions for the better part of the day but has also affected her physically by almost causing her to go blind.
The 20-year old woman experienced stinging pain in her eyes as well as having blurred vision, redness and headache and was forced to get medical attention after the pain became too much and when she felt that her eyes were “ready to burst out from her skull” reported Shanghaiist via China Daily.
Talk about an extreme case of Korean drama overdose!
The doctors have found that her condition was more severe than they thought and she was diagnosed with acute glaucoma, a condition in which the build-up of pressure in the eyes can cause blindness to its sufferers.
Acute glaucoma can be caused by long periods of staring at a tablet screen from a near distance and to make matters worse, she did not switch the lights on while using her tablet at night.
While all the 16 episodes of “Cheese in the Trap” and 2 episodes of “Descendants of the Sun,” that caused Ms Huang to almost loose her sight over are certainly worth the better part of your day, they are however not worth it enough to risk loosing a vital sensory organ.
So, Korean drama lovers, (and also tablet screen users), please do watch dramas responsibly. This has been a public service announcement.
